Peggi Blu (born in Lumberton, North Carolina) is a female R&B singer, producer, and songwriter. She began singing in church at a young age and by the time she was a teen, she had toured all through the Carolinas and decided to try her luck in New York.
Peggi had sung background vocals for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan and Luther Vandross which later led to a record deal with MCA Records.
In 1980, she released her debut album, "I Got Love." It's unknown how or if the album made the charts.
She scored her first hit with "Dancing in the Streets" which peaked at #35 on Billboard's dance music chart. The title song was featured in the ABC television movie, "Off the Minnesota Strip."
Peggi also co-starred in two Broadway musicals: "The Wiz" in 1983 with singer Stephanie Mills and "Marilyn, An American Fable" in 1984 with director Kenny Ortega and actor Scott Bakula. In 1983, she appeared on a duet with Stephanie Mills entitled "His Name is Michael."
In 1985, she released the single, "Girls It Ain't Easy" on the Injection Disco Dance Label in Europe. It's unknown how or if the single made the charts.
In 1986, Peggi got her big break after her agent submitted her to "Star Search" and she ended up winning the 1986 Grand Champion Female Vocalist award. The exposure on "Star Search" led to a record deal with Capitol Records. After moving to California, she spent the rest of 1986 and most of 1987 working on her second album.
In 1987, she released her debut album, "Blu Blowin'" which peaked at #71 on Billboard's R&B Albums chart.
The first single, "Tender Moments" peaked at #91 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart, staying on the chart for only 3 weeks.
The follow-up single, "All The Way With You" with R&B singer, Bert Robinson, peaked at #44 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart, staying on the chart for 10 weeks.
The last single from the album, "Two Can Play At That Game" didn't appear to chart at all. In 1993, Peggi released a single in England entitled "Love is the Magic" which continues to sell well throughout Europe.
From December of 1996 to May of 1997, Peggi headed off to Germany to star in a 4-month long tour of Michael Jackson's production of "Sisterella." A single from the show, "I Got the Money" was released in Europe.
In February of 1998, Peggi returned to Germany to co-star with Linda Hopkins in a revue entitled "Wild Women Blues." She has appeared on the soundtracks to "Set It Off" and "Hurricane." She was a featured soloist on the Jean-Claude van Damme film, "Desert Heat."
Peggi has performed with the Los Angeles Philaharmonic Orchestra with Esa Peka-Salonen and with the Memphis and Hawaiian Symphony with Burt Bacharach. She even sang at President Bill Clinton's inauguration.
On January 1, 2000, Peggi performed at Barbara Streisand's Millenium Concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In September of 2002, Peggi released her third album, "Livin' On Love" in the United Kingdom and Europe on Expansion Records which has received rave reviews & has gone to number one on radio charts in five different countries.
Peggi has provided vocals for artists such as Quincy Jones, Tracy Chapman, Aaron Neville, David Foster, Brian Setzer, Young M.C., Cherrelle, Irene Cara, Smokey Robinson, the Staple Singers, Phyllis Hyman, Phillip Bailey, Sweet, and Leonard Cohen. She has appeared on ten Platinum-selling albums. In March of 2006, she appeared on the ABC network show, "Miracle Workers."
These days, Peggi continues to perform and is currently performing in her new self-penned show, "Blu Sinatra" in which she sings selections from the works of Frank Sinatra. In 2012, she was featured as a vocal coach on "American Idol."
