Gina G (born Gina Marie Gardiner on August 3, 1970 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) is a female pop\dance singer. She began her career in 1990 when she worked as a DJ in Melbourne, Australia.
In 1992, Gina was the lead singer of Australian dance group, Bass Culture, who scored a Top 20 dance hit in Australia with the song, "Love The Life." In 1993, Gina left Bass Culture to start a solo career in the UK.
Gina won the "A Song for Europe" contest to become the UK's entry in the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest. Despite Gina's song, "Ooh Ahh...Just a Little Bit" coming in 8th in the contest, the song topped the UK Singles chart during the week of the contest.
In the US, the song peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, #5 on Billboard's Top 40 Mainstream chart, #13 on Billboard's Rhythmic Top 40 chart, #11 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music\Maxi-Singles Sales chart, and #25 on Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart.
In Gina's homeland, the song peaked at #5 on the Australian Singles chart. The song was successful internationally, even topping the charts in China, Japan, and Slovenia.
Gina's second single, "I Belong to You" peaked at #6 on the UK Singles chart. Internationally, the song was moderately successful. The song peaked at #34 on the Australian Singles chart.
In 1997, Gina released her debut album, "Fresh!" which peaked at #12 on the UK Albums chart and certified Silver in the UK. In the US, it peaked at #27 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart.
The title song peaked at #6 on the UK Singles chart and it charted well internationally. In Gina's homeland, the song peaked at #23 on the Australian Singles chart.
The fourth single, "Ti Amo" peaked at #11 on the UK Singles chart and did well internationally. The song topped the charts in Lebanon, but in Australia, it charted at a disappointing #97 on the charts.
The fifth single from the album, "Gimme Some Love" peaked at #25 on the UK Singles chart. In the US, the song peaked at #46 on the Billboard Hot 100, #18 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music\Club Play and Billboard's Hot Dance Music\Maxi-Singles Sales chart, and #22 on Billboard's Top 40 Mainstream chart.
Internationally, the song was moderately successful, but charted at #97 on the Australian Singles chart.
The last single, "Everytime I Fall" peaked at #52 on the UK Singles chart and was moderately successful internationally. In 1998, Gina's single, "Ooh Ahh...Just a Little Bit" got a Grammy nomination in the US for "Best Dance Recording."
Gina had seemingly disappeared from the music scene for several years. There was a long lawsuit against a former manager which took all of Gina's energy. Despite new music being recorded by Gina for a follow-up album, she wasn't allowed to release the material.
In 2000, Gina recorded various songs with Swedish music producers Lagoona which included a new version of "Oooh Ahh..Just a Little Bit" and a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walking." The latter was released on a CD single through a small independent record label, but it failed to attract any attention.
In March of 2003, Gina took part in the British reality tv show, "Reborn in the USA," but was eliminated from the show in the third round. In early 2005, she tried to represent the UK again at the Eurovision Song Contest, but she finished 5th out of 5 entries in the pre-selection program with her song, "Flashback."
In August of 2005, Gina released her second album, "Get Up & Dance" to good reviews even though the album was released through Gina's website.
These days, Gina has set up her own record label, Stuntgirl with her future music releases being distributed through Universal Records. She records in Los Angeles, California as well as London.
In late 2006, Gina released the single, "Tonight's the Night" which managed to peak at #57 on the UK Singles chart and #92 on the Australian Singles chart.
The song also did well on the club charts, peaking at #2 on the commercial dance chart. Gina is reportedly working on new music, but her two albums are now available on iTunes.
