Icy Blu

Icy Blu (born Laurel Urchik on June 1, 1974 in Austin, Texas) was a female rapper of the early 90's. She was dubbed as the "female Vanilla Ice."In 1991, Icy Blu released her self-titled debut album on Giant Records. It's unknown how or if the album ever charted.
Her first single, "Pump It (Nice 'An Hard)" peaked at #78 on the Billboard Hot 100 which sampled Salt N' Pepa's "Push It."
Icy's second single, "I Wanna Be Your Girl" peaked at #46 on the Billboard Hot 100, #45 on Billboard's Hot Singles Sales chart, and #47 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart. The song is known as Icy Blu's only biggest hit to date.

After that, Icy had seemed to have faded into obscurity, but these days, she lives in her hometown of Texas, seemingly retired from the music biz.

Just want...nay, NEED to say - Icy Blu was the one of the coolest performers I ever heard. I have just spent the last 10 years trying to remember her song Pump It. I knew there was a Salt n Pepa connection, but my memory never let me get further than that. Oh the memories...

I finally had enough and deployed a chain of Google searches to finally remember the name of the song AND the artist.

Not sure if @Debi is really your mom, but whatever it is you're doin these days, I hope you are happy. I only say this because you deserve that...because you made, and continue to make so many people happy.

Peace!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Icy Blu back in the day! I remember one time I went to see her perform at nightclub by me & she called me up onstage to sing/rap with her (my dream come true!) and unfortunately when I got up there I had to tell her I couldn't because I had laryngitis! :-( She was super nice & let me stay up onstage with her for several songs. I still have the pictures from that night. What a great memory!

Icy made it big right after my freshman year of high school. I fell in love with her voice. "I wanna be your girl" was huge in northern Cali in the summer when I went to visit my mom. I was shocked when I came home to Phoenix and none of the stations here were playing her music. I thought I'd heard the last of her when, one night I woke up at 2 in the morning to hear her beautiful voice again. That was the last time I heard her until music downloads became popular. Here I am, 21 years later, and I've FINALLY taken the time to look up her videos and verify my assumptions that her face is as sexy as her voice. Thank you Icy for you contributions to the music indusrty. Your voice will always remind me of good times in my adolescence.

I live in Australia.. Her song Pump It hit #8 on our top 40 in 1991. Her song is still played at 90s parties over here. I think we were the country where she had the most success!!

I remember following the Billboard charts and seeing all the different playlists from the big city radio stations (i live near toledo). I saw "I Wanna.." on some playlists so I decided to buy the cassette single. I loved that song! but then someone broke into my car and stole a buncha stuff including that single. I am a big music video collector now and would love to have the video to I Wanna Be YOur Girl if anyone has it in .vob or .mpg format. ah yes, the memories of Icy Blue :-)

Hello from New Zealand!
I have her album, on my 2nd copy, first one went missing???
Anywayyyyy, I think in terms of success, she probably had the most in New Zealand.
Pump It (nice and hard) went No.1, and I Wanna Be Your Girl went No.8 (I think).
Played and played and played I Wanna Be Your Girl till the Cassingle wore out, could never find a cd single copy, still can't, even on Ebay, still looking though.
I only ever saw the music video once, back in 1991 and remember it to this day.
Finally found it this year on the net and watched it again, still a great video.
Take care icy blu

Merv the nerd, but what the heck

For years I've made it my tradition to break out my Icy Blu CD and play "It's Your Birthday" for friends' and coworkers' birthdays. Last week I repeated this tradition for some new, younger staff members who had never heard of Icy Blu. They, of course, had to research this and shared with me the posts they found. I'm glad to hear you are alive and well Laurel, and I'd love to hear more of story after the album (wish you'd made more!). If you ever come to Colorado I'd love to get your autograph!

BTW - I won a car audio contest years ago with "I Wanna Be Your Girl" and I'm looking forward to showing my son how we did it, as he soon becomes old enough for a car (and a boomin' system) of his own.
