Leata Galloway

Leata Galloway (born on December 7, 1950 in Brooklyn, New York) is a female R&B singer from the '80s.

As a young girl, she listened to various types of music such as Nat King Cole and Nancy Wilson. Leata appeared in various musicals and plays such as "Hair" (which she also starred in the film version).
After a chance role in a small German film, she recorded her debut album "Leata" which was released on Ariola Records in 1981.

In New York, Leata developed her jazz nightclub act which caught the attention of Dr. George Butler at Columbia Records, who signed her to the label after seeing her at Green Street, but she ended up being usurped by the R&B department instead.
In 1988, Leata released her debut album "The Naked Truth." It's unknown how or if the album ever made the charts. The album was produced by Nick Martinelli and Preston Glass.
She scored a minor R&B hit with the song "With Every Beat of My Heart" which peaked at #69 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart, staying on the chart for 6 weeks.
After that, Leata appeared in the musical "Sophisticated Ladies" and in 1990, she released her own Japanese-import jazz album "A Sophisticated Lady" which earned her a nomination in Japan's Swing Journal for "Best Female Vocalist."

Leata also recorded a Big Band music album in Germany entitled "Live From the Hamburg Jazz Gala" with the Peter Herbolzheimer All Stars. She toured with Peggy Lee for a year and later embarked on a 17-country European tour with The Zawinul Syndicate. Since then, Leata cotninues to be active in the music business.
